The broken rib stitch is a variation on the normal rib stitch. For the normal rib stitch you knit all rows alternating one knit and one purl stitch. For the broken rib stitch you knit one row in the normal rib stitch followed by a row of only knit stitches. For the broken rib stitch you can cast on with any stitch you like. For the full pattern cast on a multiple of 2 stitches. This means the number of stitches you cast on can be divided by the number 2. Once the knitwork is finished you can bind off with any stitch you like.

For the broken rib stitch start the first row with a knit stitch, followed by a purl stitch, another knit stitch and another purl stitch. Continue alternating the knit stitch and the purl stitch until the end of the row.

For the second row only knit a knit stitch. So the entire row is knitted with a true knit stitch.

The third row is the same as the first row. So alternate the knit stitch and the purl stitch. Keep the same pattern. So on top of every knit stitch in the first row, you knit another knit stitch in the third row. On top of every purl stitch in the first row, you knit another purl stitch in the third row.

The fourth row is the same as the second row. So this row is knitted entirely in the true knit stitch.
